2009 Scholarship Recipients |
From Greg Antonelli, Gemini Youth Orchestras
I'm 18 years old and I go to school at Islip High School. I started playing electric bass in third grade and I've been involved with the school orchestra and chorus since fourth grade. Since then music has become one of the most important aspects of my life. I've been at one time or another involved with every musical performing group in Islip High School as well as several of the school musicals. Music has just allowed me to have so many great experiences. Outside of school I'm involved with the Gemini Youth Symphony Orchestra and I often play in the pit band at Airport Playhouse. I>also recently went to NYSSMA All-State for jazz bass. My other interests include math and science as well as music theory. Other than that I enjoy spending time with family, hanging out with my friends, and the occasional jam session with The Streetlights (a little jazz combo me and some friends put together).
Music means so much to me. It's just something I enjoy and because of that it's a way to escape. Whenever I pick up my bass it's like a break from everything else. Even if I need to prepare for some audition or a show or a concert it doesn't feel like I'm working it feels like I'm playing. I hope to be a music teacher when I'm older and I never want to stop learning about music. |

From Jordan Bak, Children's Orchestra Society
I attend school at West Hempstead High School. Personally, I think it has a great Music Department that I am proud to support and be a part of. I am currently part of the West Hempstead High School Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra; I love to perform with them because they express lots of energy and creativity in their performances. The Music Department also has an excellent band and chorus, which the orchestra often collaborates with in songs like "Hallelujah."
In general, I just love to play music. I have been playing the viola for six years, and I play the viola in many orchestras, including the JSE and YSE divisions of the Children's Orchestra Society, the Youth Orchestra at Molloy College, and the Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra at West Hempstead High School. I have also been playing the piano for twelve years, and I have been taking lessons at the Malverne School of Music for a very long time. I love playing music because it allows me to express my feelings and emotions with every note that I play.
Music means everything to me. Just listening to a performance brings out so many emotions, which I think is truly amazing. I think that if I had to live without hearing a single note or rhythm, I'd probably be completely lost and helpless. I hope to one day become a professional musician and performer because I feel that that is where my talent lies; in every performance, I will strive to bring out the best in me and make people feel the music that I am playing.

From Anthony Limoncelli, Metropolitan Youth Orchestra
I am currenty a senior at New Hyde Park Memorial High School in New Hyde Park, and partake in an array of activies, ranging from music to sports. Within school, I'm part of a majority of the performing groups, participating in the high school band, orchestra and jazz band. Outside of school, I perform with The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and the New York Youth Symphony.
Besides music, I have been a dedicated athlete as well, playing both Junior and Varsity baseball, throughout my high school career. I am also an active member of the National Honor Society, and achieve high academics in conjunction with my musical and athletic life.
Music has played such an enormous role in my life, and I feel as though I have benefitted more than musically from the hard work and dedication that I have put into it. Like anything, you get out what you put in. And I believe that by pouring my soul into my playing, it has opened my mind to a new level of emotional realization of the world around me. I do plan to further my musical career through college and beyond. |

Just recently, Carole and Paula generously announced their decision to perform a benefit concert for the Long Island Music Hall of Fame's Education Board this upcoming September. This is going to be an important fund raising event, and hopefully a treat for fans of the original Magic Garden.
Lastly, the Long Island Music Hall of Fame's Education Board has been hard at work creating future music education programs. This past January, Norm Prusslin, retired Manager of WUSB FM, helped organize a gathering of educators, administrators and musicians at Stony Brook University. The group also presented the very successful Marketing for Musicians in the Digital Age workshops on Tuesday, April 17 in the Auditorium of the Student Union of Stony Brook University. This is available for download on the Long Island Music Hall of Fame section of http://podarama.com/. The Advisory Board is currently working on the selection of the first Music Educator of the Year Award. Together, this diverse board is striving to bring their love of music to future generations of kids for years to come.
