Suffocation

Technical Death Metal | 2012

Centereach-based Suffocation was formed in 1988 by vocalist Frank Mullen, bassist Josh Barohn, lead guitarist Terrance Hobbs, rhythm guitarist Guy Marchais, and drummer Mike Smith. Later that same year, Marchais was replaced by Doug Cerrito. Suffocation created a blueprint for death metal with its guttural vocals, downtuned guitar sounds, and fast and complex guitar riffs and drumming. Their 1991 debut album was titled Effigy of the Forgotten, which was followed by Breeding the Spawn in 1993. Mullen and Hobbs reformed the band in 2003 with Smith, Marchais and Derek Boyer of the bands Dying Fetus and Decrepit Birth on bass. In April 2004, Suffocation released Souls to Deny. After playing more than 400 shows in the U.S. and Europe, the band then came out with its self-titled album in 2006. In 2017, Suffocation released its latest album, …Of the Dark Night. Blabbermouth.net, a website dedicated to heavy metal and hard-rock news, described Suffocation as “American death metal’s most consistent and punishing standard-bearers.”
