LIBRARY PROGRAMS

One of the goals of the Long Island Music Hall Of Fame is to help expand and raise awareness of our Long Island libraries’ collections of representative works by the many historic artists who are being honored and recognized by the hall of fame. As depositories of cultural works that represent their local areas, it is important for these works to be available in libraries in order to perpetuate the Island’s musical legacy.
Another goal of the LIMHoF is for the organization to become the authoritative reference on Long Island’s musical history. Our Board of Directors and Committee Members continue to study and catalog information, musical works, ephemera, and other items that they expect to make available as reference tools to all Long Islanders. With the help of Long Island’s many fine public, university and school libraries, we are certain that our organization, its members, local musicians, students, and those who love music, will benefit from a combined effort that will place the finest resources at their disposal.
LIMHoF has put together a dynamic multimedia lecture series for schools and libraries, and our traveling exhibit has been featured in a number of local facilities. (Further details of these programs are in this brochure.) In addition, we are working to develop CDs and DVDs designed to inspire revitalization of Long Island artists’ catalog products in new and exciting ways.
At our first induction gala in October 2006, we were delighted to welcome Billy Joel, Joan Jett, Mose Allison, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Sam “Bluzman” Taylor, Twisted Sister and many other Long Island greats. So far, it’s been a fun ride ... and we’re just beginning. We are raising the awareness of Long Island’s incredible musical legacy. We ultimately hope to make the Long Island Music Hall of Fame – and our future museum – a premier reference resource; one that will continually reach out to one of Long Island’s greatest assets ... its public libraries.

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame: Preserving a Rich History
Discover the rich musical history that sprang from Long Island, from George M. Cohan to Run-DMC and beyond, and trace their impact on all genres of music. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame’s mission to preserve the Island’s rich musical heritage, and the group’s goals of helping young musicians to make their mark and discover the importance of music will also be discussed.

Billy Joel – A Salute to the Piano Man
A multimedia event featuring rarely-seen footage of Long Island’s own piano man, Billy Joel. Trace the history of this multi-Grammy winning artist and Long Island Music Hall of Fame inductee from his roots in a Hicksville-based garage band through his record-breaking shows at Madison Square Garden in 2006.

This Trane Stopped in Dix Hills
An evening chronicling the career of jazz legend John Coltrane including a discussion of the years he lived on Long Island. This ground-breaking saxophonist first gained notoriety with Miles Davis, but he left his mark as a soloist with works like his masterpiece, A Love Supreme – written in his home in Dix Hills, Long Island. This program features footage of this master of Jazz that has never been broadcast in the U.S.

The Long Island Sound and Scene
The birth of blue-eyed soul, psychedelic freak-outs, and pounding garage rock...it all happened here on Long Island in the swingin’ 60s. This multi-media program looks at some of the most exciting and important bands that made their mark on the island. From the groups that made the charts, like the Vanilla Fudge, to the bands loved by the locals, like the Smubbs, they’re all a part of this celebratory program.

Long Island Live! Where the Music Played
Join the Long Island Music Hall of Fame for a multimedia, virtual-tour of some of the most famous places the music played during the heyday of Long Island’s live music scene. The Barge in Southampton, the tent that was once the Westbury Music Fair, and the site of the once-famous My House in Plainview are just a few of the stops along the way.

Simon & Garfunkel - Simon, Garfunkel, Tom, Jerry, Tico,
Artie Garr ... and Friends
This 75 minute multimedia program focuses on the early years of one of the most popular duos of our time. Rare audio recordings will outline the period when Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel recorded under various pseudonyms both together and apart. This is followed by a look at the duo’s incredible run of hits between 1966 and their breakup in 1970. The program features clips of performances of some of their most enduring songs that have not been seen since their initial airing over forty years ago.

These exhibits are meant to inspire the exploration and celebrate the music that has been made by Long Islanders for over a century. The island’s musical history begins in the 1890s with John Philip Sousa and encompasses the Long Island’s four counties – Kings, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk. As music progressed, it served as the home of many renowned jazz performers and classical composers of the 1940s, 50s and 60s, the stomping ground for some of America’s great folk artists and Brill Building songwriters of the 50s and 60s, and the starting point for many major rock and hip-hop acts from the 70s to today.
The Hall’s library exhibits reflect these eras and performers through photographs, collectibles and ephemera relating to musicians as diverse as George M. Cohan and Pat Benatar. LIMHoF’s traveling exhibits have had highly successful showings at the Port Washington and Oceanside libraries in Nassau County as well as other locations.
The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit organization. We consider education an important part of our mission statement, and we believe that our library programs play an important role in preserving Long Island’s rich musical heritage. There is a suggested donation/honorarium of $150 to the Long Island Music Hall of Fame for each of these programs. These funds go towards the ongoing pursuit of the Hall’s mission statement, and to offset travel expenses of the volunteers who present, and assist at, the events. Please note that since our goal is to make our programs available to all Long Island residents, we will strive, whenever possible, to work within the budget of each individual facility.
