A History of Rock and Roll on Long Island

Joe Walsh

Richard Adler sent the following email to us. We found it fascinating.

"Queens Musicians: Davy Jones of the Monkees lived in Forest Hills in Parker Towers while he was in the play "Oliver." Randy California, guitarist of Spirit, went to Forest Hills High School. His name was Randy Wolf back then. Joe Walsh is from Jackson Heights. Waddy Wachtel is also from Jackson Heights. I played guitar in The Tangerine Puppets which spawned two of The Ramones and Randy California. I also played in a band with Randy California and Walter Becker."

Mr. Adler then forwarded an email from Joe Walsh. Walsh responded to a question about the origin of his song "In The City."

"In The City" was written for the movie The Warriors. A friend of mine named Barry DeVorzon (he produced The Association, remember them?) was in charge of the music for the film and asked me to come up with something. I went to junior-high school at P.S. 216 in Queens (NYC). I was in a gang, but we weren't that tough because I had to be in by 7:30 to practice clarinet. Anyway, I came up with "In The City" out of memories of growing up partly in New York City-which contrasted a lot from where I lived before that, which was Ohio."

And the beat goes on."
