Composer | 2008

Composer Marvin Hamlisch won virtually every major award that exists: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony, three Golden Globes, and the Pulitzer Prize, which was won by A Chorus Line. (Only two individuals, Hamlisch and composer Richard Rodgers, have won a “PEGOT” (Pulitzer, Emmy Grammy, Oscar, Tony). He was the composer of more than 40 film scores, including his Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting, for which he received a third Oscar. His prolific output of scores for films include original compositions and/or musical adaptations for Sophie’s Choice, Ordinary People, The Swimmer, Three Men and a Baby, Ice Castles, Take the Money and Run, and Bananas, among many others. At the time of his passing, at age 68 in 2012, he had just finished his last musical score; it was for the film Liberace: Behind the Candelabra. Among Broadway shows, in addition to A Chorus Line, Hamlisch wrote the music for They’re Playing Our Song, The Goodbye Girl, and Sweet Smell of Success. Hamlisch was a proud resident of Westhampton Beach for many years, and he served on the honorary board of the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. He was a graduate of both The Juilliard School and Queens College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree.
